Located along the shores of the Kennebec River in the Western Foothills, Madison was incorporated in 1804 as Maine's 150th town.
Beautiful vistas, plenty of outdoor activities and a relaxed atmosphere make Madison an attractive location for visitors and residents alike. Fly-fishing, hiking and biking and river paddling make for great fun in the spring, summer and fall while miles of trails are groomed for snowmobiling, cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.
Madison's downtown area has lots to offer all within walking distance. Renys Department Store, Aubuchon Hardware and eateries like Fonzo's and the House of Pizza are anchors of a downtown district that also includes eateries, banking, groceries, sporting goods, hair salons and barber shops.
On the shores of Lake Wesserunsett the famous Lakewood Theatre offers nine shows each summer. Lakewood remains the nation's longest running summer theatre. If golf is your game, the Lakewood area is home to an 18-hole course which includes a challenging par 6.
Whether you stay for a visit or a lifetime, you'll see why Madison is a great place to live, work and play.

Lake Wesserunsett Notice to the Public:
LWA’s mission is to protect and enhance the lake and its watershed. A list of some of our conservation accomplishments and initiatives appears in the attached document.
It is crucial that we know what you think. Consequently, we are trying to increase our understanding of your views to better tailor our conservation efforts. Please complete and return the attached survey or, if you prefer, you may answer the same questions online: http://www.wesserunsett.org/2025survey
We are blessed with a relatively clean lake free of invasive species. However, lakes around the state are increasingly suffering from infestations. We had a serious scare in the fall of 2023 when boaters were found to have brought the invasive aquatic plant fanwort to Lake Wesserunsett in one of their live wells. The warden’s service charged and summonsed the boaters. Two have pleaded guilty, and two are awaiting their day in court. Volunteers from around the lake assisted the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the Lake Stewards of Maine in August 2024 with a comprehensive survey of the lake to determine if fanwort had been introduced. Thankfully, while no invasive aquatic plants were found, we will need to continue our proactive monitoring program. This incident demonstrates the importance of the DEP-sponsored Courtesy Boat Inspection (CBI) program to the lake. LWA is working to increase the hours that a trained inspector is on duty to prevent this kind of incident.
As you can see in the accompanying announcement, LWA is partnering with Somerset Woods Trustees (SWT) to raise money for the purchase of the iconic Black Point. SWT will own and be the stewards in perpetuity of Black Point and the rest of the 130-acre parcel on the shore of the lake. This major acquisition will go a long way to protecting the watershed on the west side of the lake.
