Madison Fire is an active fire department averaging 250 calls a year. Up to 30 members serve two companies (Company 1 in Madison and Company 2 in East Madison) All members are trained to Firefighter I Standards and many are trained as E.M.T.s. As a volunteer-paid per call department, we have to rely heavily on mutual aid with Anson and Skowhegan to help cover local calls.
Chief Roger Lightbody retired June 30, 2014 after 25 years of service to the Madison FD. For about a year Madison shared Chief Shawn Howard with Skowhegan. As of July 1, 2016 former Deputy Chief Don French was appointed as Madison's Fire Chief and Deputy Chief Dan Bosworth helps with oversight of the East Madison Company 2.
In 2018 the department received its second award from FEMA's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. This $45,000 grant will provide for new extrication equipment also known as "Jaws of Life". In 2014 the Department earned a $180,000 grant to replace dozens of outdated pieces of firefighting equipment, keeping personnel safe and helping to recruit new members.
